چکیده

Highly enhanced and selective adhesion can be achieved between surfaces patterned with charges even when each one has no net charge. In this and a companion paper [C. Jin, Y. Bai, A. Jagota, and C.-Y. Hui, J. Appl. Phys. 110, 054903 (2011)] we analyze the possibility of adhesion selectivity between two flat surfaces patterned with stripes of surface charge chosen such that each surface initially carries no net charge. A few combinations, with appropriately matching strip widths, are predicted to adhere to each other. We also find that the deformability of the materials plays a critical role in defining the range of patterns that recognize each other, i.e., their selectivity. With increasing compliance, a significant enhancement of adhesion can be achieved by deformation that allows better matching between charge patterns. VC 2011 American Institute of Physics. Adhesion selectivity by electrostatic complementarity. II. Two-dimensional analysis

In Part I of this work, using a one-dimensional (1D) representation of the two-dimensional (2D) electrostatic and ion concentration fields, we showed that highly selective adhesion can be achieved between two charged surfaces separated by an electrolyte. In Part II of this work, we provide a detailed theoretical justification of our 1D model by solving the electrostatic problem in a 2D configur...

Profiling charge complementarity and selectivity for binding at the protein surface.

A novel analysis and representation of the protein surface in terms of electrostatic binding complementarity and selectivity is presented. The charge optimization methodology is applied in a probe-based approach that simulates the binding process to the target protein. The molecular surface is color coded according to calculated optimal charge or according to charge selectivity, i.e., the bindi...

Electrostatic analysis of the charged surface in a solution via the finite element method: The Poisson-Boltzmann theory

Electrostatic potential as well as the local volume charge density are computed for a macromolecule by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) using the finite element method (FEM). As a verification, our numerical results for a one dimensional PBE, which corresponds to an infinite-length macromolecule, are compared with the existing analytical solution and good agreement is found. As a ma...

Electrostatic complementarity at protein/protein interfaces.

Calculation of the electrostatic potential of protein-protein complexes has led to the general assertion that protein-protein interfaces display "charge complementarity" and "electrostatic complementarity". In this study, quantitative measures for these two terms are developed and used to investigate protein-protein interfaces in a rigorous manner. Charge complementarity (CC) was defined using ...
